And Vitamin D3 again

Sebastian Rushworth MD is a Swedish doctor who likes detail. He often posts on his website www.drsebastianrusworth.com about Covid 19 outcomes and possible treatments.

He recently looked into using a form of Vitamin D3 to treat people *with* the virus but concluded there was insufficient evidence to support any significant positive results.

HOWEVER, he concluded that Vitamin D3 was still highly beneficial in prevention – see this extract from his blog dated 31st January 2021

“As I’ve written about previously, there is strong evidence that a daily vitamin D supplement decreases the relative frequency of viral respiratory infections by almost 50% in people who are vitamin D deficient. And, as mentioned already, there is a lot of observational evidence showing that people who are vitamin D deficient do worse when they get covid. So I think it’s a good idea to take a daily vitamin D supplement. 4,000 IU (100 mcg) is probably a sufficient daily dose to get the full benefit and is within the bounds of what the FDA considers a completely safe dose to take on a daily basis.

And ……..

There has been some controversy over whether vitamin D can help in the treatment or prevention of coronavirus.

A recent review of research by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence suggests there is no evidence to support taking vitamin D supplements to specifically prevent or treat the condition.

But some patients have been receiving doses of Vitamin D in the north-east of England with encouraging results.

Dr Richard Quinton, a consultant endocrinologist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle told BBC World News he believed the use of Vitamin D was effective “on the balance of probabilities”. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/health-55682925

Footnote: I’m not surprised that official bodies are often unable to to find that particular supplements are effective or contribute to the overall health of individuals. Individual supplement brands rarely meet the highest standards and dosage is far from optimal – see my further thoughts on this *here*.
